The critical path is the longest sequence of dependent tasks in a project schedule. It determines the minimum amount of time the project can take to complete. Every task on the critical path has exactly zero float — meaning any delay on a critical task immediately moves the project end date by the same amount. The critical path is not a fixed property of a project; it shifts as the schedule changes.
How the Critical Path Is Calculated
Critical Path Method (CPM) uses a two-pass algorithm through the network of task dependencies.
The forward pass starts from the project's first task and works toward the end. For each task, it calculates the earliest possible start date — which equals the latest finish date of all its predecessors — and then the earliest possible finish date based on the task's duration. The result is the earliest date the project can be completed.
The backward pass works in reverse, from the target finish date back toward the start. For each task, it calculates the latest allowable start and finish dates that would not push the project beyond its earliest finish. A task whose latest start matches its earliest start has zero scheduling flexibility — it is on the critical path. A task whose latest start is later than its earliest start has float equal to that difference.
Critical Path in Maverick
Maverick calculates the critical path automatically from your task dependencies and durations. Critical tasks are highlighted in a distinct color on the Gantt chart. The critical path recalculates in real time whenever you change a duration, add or remove a dependency, or assign a resource constraint — the Gantt display updates immediately.
Maverick's AI chat can also analyze the critical path on demand. Ask it "What is on the critical path right now?" and it will list the tasks, durations, and total path length. Ask "What are my options for pulling the finish date in by two weeks?" and it will suggest compression strategies targeting the critical tasks.
