Waterfall Methodology

Waterfall is a sequential project management methodology where each phase must be completed and formally approved before the next begins. Work flows in one direction — like water falling — through phases such as initiation, planning, design, construction, testing, and closure. Each phase produces defined deliverables, and a gate review confirms those deliverables are complete before the project moves forward.

How Waterfall Works

A typical waterfall project moves through these phases in sequence:

1. Initiation — Define the project purpose, authorize it with a project charter, identify key stakeholders
2. Planning — Build the project schedule, define scope, allocate resources, set the baseline
3. Execution — Perform the work, manage resources, track progress against the schedule
4. Monitoring & Control — Compare actuals to the baseline, manage changes, resolve issues
5. Closure — Deliver the final product, document lessons learned, formally close the project

The gate between each phase is typically a milestone — a go/no-go decision point where stakeholders review deliverables and authorize the next phase.

When Waterfall Works Best

Waterfall is most effective when requirements are stable and well-understood upfront, when the work is sequential by nature (you cannot install plumbing before framing is complete), and when formal documentation and approval gates are required by contract or regulation. Construction, manufacturing, defense, and regulated engineering projects are natural fits.

It is less effective when requirements are likely to change during execution or when early, incremental delivery of value is more important than comprehensive upfront planning.
